When I feel like running away, I take long walks across Manhattan and often end up at Pier 54. In 1912, the rescued passengers of the RMS Titanic were discharged here. In 1915, the RMS Lusitania left from this port six days before it was struck into the ocean. Nowadays, it’s simply open space, used for outdoor events of various sorts. You can still see the archway of the old shed that used to stand there.
Every time I’m here, it’s empty and windy. There’s no one else in the world.
